In this educational gallery you will find projects completed by my second grade class. Some of the projects were completed with electronic technology while others used basic tech tools. The collaborative nature of my teaching practice is presented in the projects.
Technology in our classroom
Students wrote and filmed (with a little assistance from teachers) this movie to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
They represented themes in which they believed Dr. King worked hard to change. See if you can identify the 3 themes in the video. |
Mixed ability groups studied and demonstrated their understanding of trade first subtraction. This assignment allowed all members to participate. Each group created a video and students did a gallery walk to view the presentations.

Hour of Code 2013
Second grade students answered the charge from President Obama to explore coding. The second graders served as peer mentors to kindergarten students as they learned to code.
International Festival - Country Study
Every 2 years our school hosts an International Festival. During this festival each participating classroom selects a country to study and represent. Below are some pictures of the year we chose Ghana. During this country study, Ghanaian studies were integrated into all subject areas: the patterns to form kente cloth were explored doing math and art, Anasi the Spider folktales were studied during our literacy block with a primary source account of these tales by our Ghanian class visitor. Students compared the communities in Ghana to our local and national communities as we studied Social Studies and the students strengthened writing and research skills as they looked up and produced research reports on different aspects of Ghana.
Community Builders Project
Second grade students used knowledge gained in Social Studies about communities to build clay communities in Art. This project allowed students to transfer information and use the design process to define the problem, develop solutions, decide on conditions and describe what they did. Students worked as a team and incorporated math skills as they completed the project.
